The Top Five (FREE) Ways to Become WAY More Awesome…

After five years of experience as a personal trainer, two years in group fitness instruction, what seemed like an eternity in school learning about all this crap, and EVEN longer listening to you crazies, I have compiled a list of five items that I believe to be the MOST IMPORTANT five things you can do to improve your health. Why five? Because the average human being has an attention span of 8 seconds, which means you may read #1 then switch over to Pinterest. It’s a risk I’m willing to take. Why so simple? Because humans are convinced that simple means insufficient. On the contrary, simplicity can be deceptively valuable. Why free? Because humans are brain-washed into believing that the only way to get fit is to buy $100 shoes that individually house each of our toes as if they’re a bunch of pretentious jerks. They’re toes! Let’s cut the crap, shall we. Just free, simple, great advice… Read up…

1) DRINK WATER: You may find this extremely elementary, but it’s number one on this list for a reason. People always say they drink a lot of water but I’m realizing that people consider Gatorade and Vitamin Water, water. Well, why wouldn’t you? It’s called Vitamin WATER, isn’t it? That’s like eating ranch dressing with a hint of broccoli and calling yourself a “very healthy eater”. Water, as is (NO ADDITIVES… even if its zero calories!) does wonders for your body!

2) GET SLEEP: Melatonin, sleepy time herbal teas, a bedtime story… Whatever it is you need to do to get your zzz’s, GET THEM! Any client of mine who has had trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, finding time for sleep, or anything in between can explain, in detail, how important sleep is and the damage caused by sleeplessness.

3) BREATH DEEPLY: Ok, so you must be thinking, “Is she really reminding us to breath?” Yes. Yes, I am. You know when you put something right by the front door so you remember to grab it on the way out, and instead you step right over it? You could literally trip on it, cuss at it for being in your way, and still leave without it? That’s my take on breathing. We , literally, forget to do it. In fact, I’m sure you’d fine throughout your day you really spend more time doing some sort of weird, stressed, hyperventilating thing than actually breathing. When you actually take a nice, long, deep, breath, a couple very important things happen… You fill your body with oxygen, the most important nutrient for our health, AND your chest rises, your shoulders drop down and round back, your head sits back allowing proper air intake, causing you to then… (Dun dun duuun… See number 4)…

4) STAND UP STRAIGHT: This is my number one blog topic, hands down. It is the most crucial element to a pain-free life. It is, in my opinion, the most overlooked problem when it comes to health as a whole… AND… It is one of our most difficult, yet completely fixable, problems. Set a reminder in your phone every hour of your day from 9-5. Label this reminder “Posture Check”. When the alarm sounds, evaluate your posture, then FIX IT. You’ll be amazed at how often you slouch (if you don’t already know) AND you’ll be that much closer to breaking those bad habits and getting your body in proper alignment.

5) LAUGH OFTEN: This has turned into about a billion cheesy sayings… but it’s true. Laughter can be some of the best medicine. Always find time to enjoy your life, especially when it seems the least enjoyable. Even in the darkest times, there are always reasons to smile. Now, if you’re not sure where you might find a good laugh, come to the gym. Gym people are hilarious. You don’t think so? Well, you must be the one we’re laughing at, and you gotta admit, that’s pretty funny.

Yours in health, happiness, and the easiest five ways to get you there,

-Verity Somers
